Don't use props for the sake of using props. Instead, use memory enhancers.
I know that this reality is hard to hear. We moms, myself included, love, love, LOVE the use of props. We are all about themes and coordinating with the time of the year, season, and milestone. Even as a start up photographer, I was about BUYING. ALL. THE. PROPS. (My hubs & wallet temporarily banned me from Target, Hobby Lobby, and Michaels for weeks). Then one day, while flipping through past practice sessions I took of my son, I realized something; props do not make the memories. In fact, they almost DATE the memories.
When I look at my family portraits and Carter's first milestones, I want to remember a feeling. I want to remember how much love my family shares and the happiness my family experiences daily. I want to remember these emotions when I look at our pictures to get me through my struggles like the daily toddler tantrums and help me continue to soar during our greatest days (successful potty training days). The photos I have that are bombarded with props only reminds me of, excuse me while I cringe, the work put into a picture and it fully takes away from the focus of that memory.
Don't get me wrong, props are not the enemy. Props can be (*SHOULD BE ) used in a way that enhances a moment instead of becoming a moment. That one special toy, a grandma-made blanket, or even bubbles can enhance a picture. Before you book your session, ask yourself these 3 questions...
1. What do I want to remember when I look back at this photograph?
2. Does this add to the memory or does this DISTRACT the focus of the memory?
and
3. What are we doing with these images in the end? Are we framing them for our family gallery or is this a Facebook memory?
BONUS: When in doubt, ask your photographer! Can we make use of this and still make it timeless? There are so many talented photographers who use props and create gorgeous works of art! It is possible to do so.
As for me? Minimal to no prop milestones will forever have my heart.
