A little piece of Colorado has decided to visit me; snow!!
For my lovely friends who do not live in Washington, it is SNOWING in Seattle! Seattleites are fully prepared for the rain, but winter just got real here. We have a winter storm on the way, as we speak! The roads have been icy, school has been cancelled for THREE DAYS (cue jealous 13 year old Jane. District 11 NEVER closed school). And, plenty of schools are already calling for early releases on Friday (I did not even know THAT was a thing).
Anyways, I want to prepare my lovely Washingtonians for…
Snowmageddon 2019
And how to take pictures of your kiddos playing in the snow.
So moms, I know we are all going to be spending even MORE time with our kiddos, so we might as well have fun with it. These will be the memories they talk about at school and write about during free writing time. Take the pictures that will make up their stories! So break out those cell phones and get ready…
First tip is to drop it like its hot. Get down mama!
Dig in deep and do those squats! We only see those sweet babies of ours playing in the snow from way up here. It is time to get a different perspective: sit in the snow with them, crawl in those snow tunnels, and snap that picture from there! From their level, we are reminded how little they actually are and how big the world is around them. Plus, aren’t they the cutest from here.
Tip number two: burst mode
Get rid of those blurry photos and take in-focus ones on burst mode! Do this for the snow balls fights, the hilarious sledding faces, and the ones of your kiddos (or fur babies) rolling in the drift. Capture the flying snow, their laughter, and the absolute fun they are having!
Caution: This is only intended for action shots. Otherwise, you will get 34 pictures of that same adorable crying face that is refusing to come back inside, even though they have been complaining about how cold their nose is for the last 15 minutes.
Tip number three: you and your kids do not need to be perfect.
We all believe you. Your family is having fun. Wonderful! Fun can be tears, anger, contentment, laughter and all the emotions that come with snow days. Your bright-eyed babies do not need to be cheesing at the camera. Take the candid shots! Take the shot while they are staring out the window as the snow falls. Take the shot of them making a snow ball and eyeing their next target (you). Take the shot of them exhausted, sitting still at the bottom of that sledding hill. Those little moments are the ones that you will want to remember.
Tip number four: add some color.
I am not talking about telling your munchkins to make the snow yellow. I’m talking about their gloves, their hat, their jacket, even those rainboots we are temporarily using as snow boots (that is a jab at you Target). The snow is already creating a beautiful blank canvas. The color will provide a nice contrast and an easy focus point of your picture.
Tip number five: have fun and JOIN IN.
Take all the selfies.
Seriously, how many real snow days do we get here in the PNW? Unless you are travelling to the snow, we typically do not see this amount. So don’t forget to put the phone away and spend time with your littles. They will be begging you to take them outside. Then, all of a sudden, it is tomorrow; the day they are moving out of the house into their college dorm, getting married, having babies, and reminiscing with you about Snowmageddon 2019.
